1990 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Brougham Sedan

1990 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Brougham Sedan

There are differing accounts of the origin of the Caprice name.  One states that it was coined by Bob Lund, Chevrolet's General Sales Manager, after a classy restaurant he frequented in New York City.  Another says the car was named after Caprice Chapman, the daughter of auto executive James P. Chapman.  A new Brougham four-door sedan joined the model line-up.  Brougham models featured a 55/45 front seat with armrest, and a new "pillow design" with velour fabrics.  Broughams featured woodgrain appliqué on its dash fascia, a dome map light, front-door courtesy lights and 20 oz carpeting.  Power window controls for all models moved from the door panel to the armrest for improved ergonomics.

For consignment, a 1990 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Brougham, which was a 1 owner car until this year when our consignor purchased it in its unmolested 79,104 title verified original mile, window sticker retaining form.  This example has F41 sport suspension, some servicing to the power windows, power locks as well as the AC system, and has an original interior.  A beautiful example, straight and true and in square and rectangle form.

Exterior
Correct Medium Gray Metallic covers all the large straight steel panels of this car.  Some orange peel can be seen, along with a small bubbling however it's minimal.  Nice trimmings all around in stainless steel remain shiny and include the grille, front bumper, wheel well molding, wide rocker trimmings, window surrounds and handles.  On top is a gray padded landau vinyl padded top complete with the Brougham badge and fleur-de-lis insignia badge within the padding on the C pillar.  Nicely squared off long lines make up the design of this example and these remain very straight and rust free.  4 doors, a large trunk, correct badging, and long long hood and this would be the last year before it was replaced by a more rounded euro smaller aero design.  Maybe the last of the Mohicans?  Wire wheels cover with thin white wall tires in 15-inch format kept this Caprice grounded and looking good.  Wonderfully straight, wonderfully gray, and wonderfully luxurious as one could get short of a Cadillac, but at a fraction of the cost.

Interior
Perfectly preserved bray fuzzy velour is covering the door uppers, which are loaded with conveniences like wood veneer, molded sharped off panels and bump outs to those the actuators, toggles and joysticks which operate the conveniences.  For the very clean dash front more wood appliqué, gray panels and behind plastic clear covering the instrumentation with the optional gauge package are all lined up in front of the driver.  The factory wheel fronts this clean dash and presents in gray as well.  In the center is the “climate center” as well as the factory AM/FM/Cassette radio with an equalizer built in.  Recently shampooed gray carpeting covers the floors on which float multi paneled overstuffed buckets in front, a larger armrest in the center, and in back a full comfortable bench.  Above is a tight fuzzy broadcloth gray headliner and all is well and very clean for this interior.

Drivetrain
Under the insulated hood resides a 5.0 Liter V8 complete with EFI and a 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission, (200R4 type), with a 10 bolt 3.08 rear axle all factory correct and all very clean and mechanically sound.  This rear axle is a Performance option add-on as per the window sticker.

Undercarriage
Underneath we note some slight surface rust on various parts and the usual suspects, but all unremarkable as to any structural issues.  Road dirt and patina are here as well and we note this car is equipped with the F41 sport suspension which is independent coil springs upfront and a 4 link with coil springs on back.  Power front disc braking and power rear drum braking is seen and a clean rust free stock exhaust is on and proudly displayed throughout the undercarriage.

Drive-Ability
A like new car experience right out of the time machine from 1990.  With a turn of the key the engine fired right up and idled silently.  It took off and drove like a dream.  Noted the power windows worked flawlessly as did the power locks and a cold AC which was recently upgraded was experienced.  A good solid driver.

You nearly cannot go wrong with this one, and as I see it this example was a “driven to Church on Sundays car and it was not at high speed!”  Excellent overall condition, and well cared for by the long time one owner.
