good enough welds on welded diff?

just picked this up, about to install it..
i already drained the old oil, bought a new gasket, bought new diff oil.

are these welds good enough? looks to me that its been welded correctly, but this is my first welded diff so im asking everyone with experience.

i have mine welded like that.. i have larger welds in the same areas though

Those welds look fine. That is usually where most people weld. I also bought a welded diff with the exact same welds... after about 8 months of casual drifting this is what happened...




Then this happened.... new diff + plate weld... SOLID.




Just drift it till it breaks...haha

I weld mine with plates. They've held up to 600whp so far.

Mine looked similar to that but after 2 events and 3 yrs of daily, the welds eventually broke/gave out/whatever you call it.

thanks everyone, i guess ill plate weld it.
but im gonna daily this thing and probably do 2 events, 3 max. im leaning toward just installing it right now, been anxious to try it out.

i was told the diff i bought was tracked, so, before i drained the oil, when i removed the drain plug there were a bunch of small shards on the plug, is that normal?

and do i have to disassemble the the diff to get it plate welded or can a welder do it as is?

That's normal. I also had shards on my drain plug. I would plate weld to be safe, especially if the car is your daily. I don't believe you have to disassemble the diff to plate weld, but I did because I had to swap the internals to another housing. I would suggest cleaning the teeth very well with brake cleaner/carb cleaner so the welds penetrate better...

You really don't need to plate weld it if it's done properly. Remove the dif, clean it well, pre heat it with a torch. Weld the gears as pictured above, then also weld outer part of the gears to the housing. If done properly, there is no need for a plate which only adds more rotating mass. People who do a lot of off roading have welded dif's like this for years with great sucess, and that puts way more stress on the welds than sliding across pavement.

Those welds will crack, but the diff will still lockup because the gears cant mesh with the slag in there it will just be noisy, I weld plates in mine.

Make sure brake clean is completely evaporated, the fumes are toxic. Serious stuff, you can literally die from it.

im sure theyll crack eventually but even after just DDing it and maybe 2 events?

my car is literally up in the air right now, just drained my opened diff, debating whether or not i should remove it and install the welded. lol

id get it welded properly. mine took a dump on me and driving around with your car sounding like a f1 car with a time bomb in the back is scary stuff..im never going back to welded =/

not that long. i weld stuff that i clean with brake clean all the time. it needs to be completely evaporated. if you can wire brush it, i'd do that too.

The other thing your going to want to be careful of with the welded dif is this. If you daily the car, make sure to mind the roads when it rains, esp when it first starts. I know a few people that have had their cars start to kick out when in a hard turn on the wet roads. Makes driving the car a bit more unpredictable.

Also, the brake clean warning is mainly for hidden pockets of it that you could hit when welding. As stated, just make sure its dry. It also depends on which steps are taken first. We usually drian, clean, preheat then weld. This way the metal is nice and warm for max penetration and all the oils and cleaners are burnt off.

As others said, get a plate welded in. Mine is plate welded and I am now the 3rd owner. It's been on cars with like 300-400whp prior to mine and it held up fine. So my KA will hopefully not blow it up...

If the diff was pre heated properly they'll hold.

I pre-heat all diff's to 450*F before welding. This also burns any remaining fluids (Most of them)
Not a 240 diff, but a centre diff I did for a Scoob

o0o0o. getting fancy and tig welding diffs. wish i could do that to nissan diffs but it's too much of gaps inbetween/too hard to access.

not true spools can break my friend with a older monte carlo that has a mild built 350 that he does some pulls with here and there and broke one

Something other than the spool was wrong there. Those things are good for some pretty crazy power.
