Description

Originally from the Middle East. In antiquity, statues were made from the wood.

The Cupressus are an identifying feature of the landscape of Provence. The slim, dark green spires impart a sense of structure and permanence to the towns and villages.

Flowers

Male and female flowers on the same tree. Male flowers cylindrical, 3-5 mm, female flowers round. Wind pollinated.

Leaves

Scales leaves resemble green scales e.g. Cupressus, Juniperus. Very small and scale-like, 0.5-1 mm long.

Fruits Seeds

Cone: round and green when young, becoming woody, grey-brown and shiny, 2-4 cm.

Medical

Cone (when green): to treat lung and circulatory problems.
