It’s been an excellent year for celebrity hair. After a year (or two) in which red carpet and event hairstyle took a backseat due to the pandemic, 2022 felt like the time to get experimental again. We saw colour switch-ups – everything from acid brights to all-things-red – architectural styles, lots of natural texture and embellishment. It was truly a joy to behold.

Here, Vogue charts some of the year’s best celebrity hair looks for your delectation.

Florence Pugh

Having chopped all her hair off at the end of 2021, this year saw Florence experiment with different ways to wear a shorter hairstyle. Working with her go-to stylist, Peter Lux, she wore it slicked back, textured, with a sweeping fringe and with a deep side parting – to name just a few. One of our favourites was during her “Miss Flo” moment at the Don’t Worry Darling premiere in Venice, above.

Is there any hair colour that Jodie Turner-Smith can’t pull off? A rainbow of lime green, lilac, white blonde and hot pink, there has never been a more versatile buzzcut. Fast becoming a beauty icon, she’s also been giving on the make-up front, too.

Lily James

@halleybrisker

Once a faithful brunette, Lily James shook things up this year. Not only did she shapeshift into Pamela Anderson in Pam & Tommy – for which she adopted the Baywatch star’s signature peroxide lengths (a wig, of course) – but she also experimented with various shades of brunette, caramel blonde, copper and even a blunt-cut black bob, complete with a micro-fringe. Proof that she can do it all? Her next-level bow-embellished up ’do (created by hairstylist Halley Brisker) at the Fashion Awards.

Lupita Nyong’o

Serving some next-level sculptural hairstyles this year, Lupita Nyong’o’s topknots, twists, locs and braids have all been beauty gold this year. A highlight was her loc crown at the Wakanda Forever premiere in London – a look that was created by her longtime hairstylist, Vernon François.

Daisy Edgar-Jones

We all love a fringe – and one of the style’s greatest British advocates is Daisy Edgar-Jones. Proving the versatility of a good set of bangs, she wears hers in all manner of ways. Plus since working with super-stylist George Northwood, she’s now the proud owner of a more directional cut. True to her low-key girl-next-door aesthetic, it’s unfussy but super chic.

Simone Ashley

It was a big year for Simone Ashley. Not only did she shine on our screens during the second season of Bridgerton, but she also shot her first British Vogue cover. Ashley proved she can up the ante in the hair department – as well as kiss curls and wet-look finishes, she also demonstrated the art of expensive-looking shine.

Zendaya

When it comes to her hair, Zendaya has always been chameleonic, and this year was no different. One of our favourites was her bouffant up ’do, complete with black hair ribbon, at the Emmy Awards in September. Perfect Hollywood hair.

From her big and bounteous afro to mega-long braids, Tracee never puts a foot wrong in the hairstyle department. A recent look by Marcia Hamilton saw the star whipping her braids back and forth to joyous effect.
