The Velvet Underground's first album gets deluxe reissue

This article is more than 11 years old
The Velvet Underground & Nico will be supplemented by 29 previously unreleased songs and a 1966 live show

One of rock's most influential debuts is getting the deluxe reissue treatment. The Velvet Underground & Nico will be appearing as a six-CD set on 1 October, with three CDs of alternate versions, demos and live recordings. In total, the set will feature 29 recordings that have never before had an official release.

The set will include nine tracks cut to acetate on 25 April 1966, including a nine-minute version of European Son, plus six tracks from rehearsals at Andy Warhol's Factory in January 1966, including Miss Joanie Lee, Walk Alone and a version of There She Goes Again with Nico. Two discs are dedicated to a live performance recorded in Columbus, Ohio, in November 1966, featuring two extended songs – Melody Laughter and The Nothing Song, both clocking in at around 28 minutes.

The Columbus set has been much bootlegged but never officially released. There had been hopes of an officially sanctioned live series following Polydor's release of the three-CD set The Bootleg Series Volume 1: The Quine Tapes in 2001, but disputes between the band and Polydor's parent company Universal put paid to any further albums in the series. The same disputes had also prevented Miss Joanie Lee appearing on a previous reissue of the first Velvet Underground album.
