Singer/songwriter and roots musician Putnam Smith will be joined by acclaimed cellist April Reed-Cox at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, for the last music event of the summer season at The Dance Hall in Kittery, Maine.

Smith, who hails from Portland, Maine, could be an old-world troubadour fresh from the 19th century. After all, he lives in a log cabin, plays his Grandfather's banjo, and prints up the jackets of his CDs on an antique letterpress. Yet this rootsy multi-instrumentalist songwriter, who performs on guitar, mandolin, fretless banjo and piano, as steeped as he is in old-time Appalachian traditions, is very much a storyteller for the modern age.

Putnam first came to national attention with his 2009 release "Goldrush," and his next release, "We Could Be Beekeepers." He has begun to establish himself as an acoustic tour-de-force not only in his hometown of Portland, but as a nationally touring musician. Engaging folks with humor, charm, and storytelling, hem has performed in more than 35 states, from the East to West coasts.

April Reed-Cox has been playing cello since she was 4. She is a classically trained musician who holds a master's degree in music performance. She has competed throughout the country, and most recently was runner up for the Symphony of the Mountains concerto competition in Kingsport, Tenn.

She prides herself on diversity, and performs chamber, orchestral, solo, improvisational, folk and celtic/irish music from Maine to South Carolina. Reed-Cox plays with Smith as well as The Ale House String Band, The Early Evening Show Orchestra, Bangor Symphony Orchestra and Maine Pro Musica, while teaching at Bay Chambers and Woodsound Studios.

She is also developing a small-scale, self-sufficient farming operation at Twisted Maple Farm.

Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door and can be purchased at www.thedancehallkittery.org and RiverRun Bookstore in Wallingford Square, Kittery.

The Dance Hall is located at 7 Walker St. in Kittery.
