The thing about icons is that with massive popularity also comes fatigue. Every once in a while, though, an example like this 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Coupe up for bids on Hemmings Auctions comes along to remind you how an icon got to be big in the first place. The proportions, the Tropical Turquoise body paint, the whitewall tires... it all helps frame the Bel Air's enduring style and excellent proportions. And under the hood it's not an LS swap, but a good old-fashioned 283 V-8 (upgraded with electronic ignition). From the auction listing:

During a model year that saw the American auto industry produce a plethora of impressive cars, Chevrolet’s two-door hardtop Bel Air Sport Coupe stood out. Some 65 years later, the ’57 Bel Air hardtop is still admired worldwide by collectors and non-collectors alike, making it a true icon.

This Tropical Turquoise and India Ivory 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Coupe hardtop is described by the selling dealer as “total eye candy.” Rather than having been modified as so many Tri-Five Chevys have been over the years, this example has been restored largely with authenticity in mind, still featuring a 283-cu.in. V-8 with a Powerglide transmission sending power to the rear axle.

The selling dealer, MS Classic Cars, shares that the car has been extensively gone through and meticulously detailed prior to its listing here. The dealer has attached a receipt for the extensive parts and services provided for this Bel Air in preparation for the sale, which included maintenance and refurbishment of the following systems: power steering, power brakes, ignition, cooling, suspension, electrical, fuel (including a new carburetor), and more.

A Square-Body GMC Dually, A '71 Alfa Spider, And Other Finds From Hemmings.com

We can’t help surfing online classifieds to search for deals and then getting caught up in daydream builds each time we come upon something interesting—that’s standard behavior for gearhead car enthusiasts. For those of us on staff here at Hemmings, having collector car classifieds and an online auction site under the same virtual roof just encourages those tendencies. So, when the end-of-month report of sold vehicles hits the inboxes around here, there are always some completed sales that jump out and make some of us wish we’d gotten in on the bidding action.

Every so often we'll hear from someone who thinks the Hemmings Marketplace only caters to high-end collector cars, and the players with the budgets to navigate in that realm, that really isn’t the case—there are always deals to be had among the offerings, some that really stand out. If fact, when the roundup of April sales came out recently, I noticed several vehicles that made me think I should have been paying more attention while bidding was still going on. Here are a few highlights that really got the wheels spinning in my head with some theoretical projects.
