germination and growth

Sowing The Seed

Lemon Balm can be grown indoors or directly outdoors. If started indoors, sow in peat pots, 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last frost. Sow the seeds at a depth of 1/16” under topsoil so that direct light can reach them. Transplant or direct sow outdoors when the weather is warm & all danger of frost passes. Check below for spacing and growth habits.

Growing Conditions

Lemon Balm will enjoy an area that receives full sunlight for the majority of the day, with temperatures of at least 65F or more. The soil should be rich in organic matter, but also well drained. To improve drainage, we recommend adding a light compost to any areas that consist of hard, compact soil. Water the seeds daily with a mist setting or other light water setting to avoid overwatering the seeds.

Germination & Growth

Your Lemon Balm will typically take 7 to 14 days to germinate. The plants will grow to a mature height of about 12 to 24 inches tall and spread anywhere between 12 to 18 inches wide. Space each plant roughly 6 to 12 inches apart from one another. Harvest fresh leaves for many culinary uses. Their lemony flavored leaves can be added to stews, soups & salads, and are also popularly used in many teas as well.

Planted these.
Sprinkled a dozen of these ground pepper sized seeds into a 6 inch pot 8 days ago. Three sprouting. In a south facing Mid- Michigan heated sun room night temps mid 50s, day mid 70s. Transplanted outside early June and they all croaked. New story: Replanted new seeds outside late in June. Kept moist while sprouting outside gentle soaking every few days. See the pic taken late October after several frosts (27°) that have killed off everything else in the garden. The verdict: Seeds are good from this company. Lemon Balm is just better grown outside when danger of frost is gone.

It will take a year or two to know how the plants are, but I give it a good rating for good germination. These seeds DO germinate very well. I am not familiar with this plant, so I can't compare to other Lemon Balm plants. but they do smell lemony if you rub them with your fingers. I got them to mix with Spearmint tea.

every seed sown turn into a plant.but ones kept in a container didn't do very well not until planted directly into the ground did they just bush and regain health and vivid green color. lemon balm is really a very finicky kind of a plant to grow you'd think not because of the underground rhizome like grass but it was for me anyways!! the big healthy leaves taste and smell great. thankyou.

I ordered these and anise hyssop seeds- all of which seem highly viable. Starts came up in my mini greenhouse indoors in a sunny window within two weeks, and look very healthy though slow-growers. At 1" tall they are lemony when pinched. you can't go wrong with lemon balm as an ornamental, for tisanes, for sugar syrups, or to keep your honeybees happy. I'm growing mine for my bee yard.

I've planned two packets of these (1000 seeds) and I've only got a handful of tiny plants... The germination rate on these was really low. I finally got them to get going under a grow light and on top of a heat mat. Growing in seed trays under a sunny window won't cut it with these. Of the 1000 seeds planted, I've ended up with around 40 starts. Fingers crossed they'll stay healthy and grow into large plants!
