A brief scene appeared in my mind yesterday, one of those conversations that stay with you even when you don’t want them to: I remembered one of the many reasons why I stopped drawing.

When I used to draw everyday (around 2006) I got too many complaints at my house, my mom used to say that I would spent too much time drawing, that this will damage me.

I guess feeling so much passion, dedication and keeping discipline about something (especially when you are young, and have so much free time) can be a… bad thing for some people somehow.

One day I drew an angel, and mistakenly let the drawing block open, at sight. My mom noticed it and her face was covered by nothing but disgust:

"Is this a Man or a Woman?", she rudely asked me.

magic-ball.png ghost.png knife.png ghost.png magic-ball.png

I replied that I didn’t know, since I wasn’t thinking on a gender when I was drawing it, I was only concerned about how could I turn this drawing into something really beautiful.

This answer made her mad. And a complaint followed instantly about how wrong was to do such a thing, drawing people which weren’t evidently a man or a woman; after this, she told me that something was really bad with me, and suggested that my mind was having a problem since I was drawing an androgynous character.

I explained to her what the ambiguous beauty was, that there were real people who didn’t look like a gender or the other, and that I found such detail extraordinary.

But her reaction, and her disapproving face made me feel ashamed, about me, about my drawing, and about what I just said, even when I was looking at my drawing as it was the prettiest thing (I was proud of how good the anatomy was, as well as how I used colors and charcoal); It made me feel doubt on any beauty that could be beyond exclusively feminine or masculine features.

10 years later from this, I still remember it clearly.

My mom is a generous, intelligent and brave person, she doesn’t follow prejudices, however, I understand she was born in a very different time from those we live now, and sadly there are a lot of erroneous preconceptions forming part of how she was raised.

Therefore, this I remembered left me with a terrible feeling: Remembering the reasons why I would hide my drawing blocks, until I ended leaving them behind.

For the next topic of the 31Witches3 prompt, I drew a Detective Witch.

They are a young person who has lived too much, and they’re tired of far too many things to be numbered. They have the gift to see between the two worlds, and even if they don’t want to, the only thing that brings them peace every day, is using this gift to help others, so it’s not strange that the police of their city calls them in order to find missing people or solving complexed cases.

This Witch it’s a Non-binary, which explain their ambiguous design (I also got inspiration on the appearance of a very treasured distant friend), it’s the first time I draw one in such a long time.

A Non-Binary Person is someone who doesn’t identify (entirely or partially) with any of the features of the binary genders, that is to say, masculine or feminine. They are people whose gender identity is, we could say, in the middle, we could even say their features represent a third gender!

I find this topic very marvelous, inside the whole spectrum of human identities, I pay especial attention towards Non-Binary people and characters.

Aesthetically speaking, they are really beautiful.

I feel that including this nature/characteristic on comic characters, novels and series, opens a big range of possibilities, where actions, decisions and thoughts of the character are entirely free of any gender ideology.

And I feel this freedom as the most clear and big canvas that I had the chance to ever find (talking about literary recourses and how characters evolve on them).

I hope that I would be able to befriend non-binary, demisexual and asexual people, since I feel that they must have a bigger perspective of the world due their nature beyond of mere mundane sexuality topics than most people are able to know or understand.

• I have been listening to the LoL World Championship’s music theme for almost a week, RIOT is catching all the attention with their mega productions, every time there’s a new Champion or Splash ART...and I feel a mixture of joy, impotency and adrenaline: First, because I have more than 1 year without playing (my pc isn’t working), and I have been played since the second year of the game; and also because I have 2 Cosplay Outfits paused of my Favorite Champions. In any case all the references and Easters Eggs are awesome! •

• • •

I have dedicated myself to work on many things those last weeks, I have found myself submerged entirely in little projects that fill me with joy, and keep me busy when situations out of my hands kind of block me to be productive as I would like (for example, today I had lacked electricity for approximately 8 hours).

However, I finally managed to finish my first bead embroidery!, I feel the pinkie pawah on my hand.

✨ This is the most strong and strawberrish protection you’ll be able to find ever ;3c ! ! ✨

I’m so excited to share the complete process with you all here, I have been daydreaming about making this piece for weeks; when I look at it, is still difficult to me to believe I accomplished it.

Beautiful drawing, @tesmoforia and one that I can relate well. I also used to shy away from showing anyone my drawing and in fact, in real life, I still do this... I think it is very difficult to not feel attacked sometimes, when society tries to fit us into boxes... Like how a man must look like a man and how a woman must look like a woman? But in real life, not every woman is feminine or beautiful. Trying to forcefully make things fit, in essence, erases those people who do not really fit into those "idealized" boxes...

I love this post and i love your drawing very much. Please never stop arting, you are a beautiful spirit <3

🍃 🌸 Spidey cutie:

Reading your comment has made me so happy, dear spider! I’m glad this topic isn’t odd or unknown here; I was very excited thinking what kind of reactions the post was going to get.

You are completely right: Forcing stereotypes as what is “ok” or what is “correct”, completely erases and strokes with a line of rejection whatever detail that doesn’t fit for the box, and this is really unfair... beauty comes in multiple forms and ways, and loving it as it is shouldn’t be a reason for complaints.

I’m really sorry to know how shy you had felt to show your drawings (they are so fantastic, and have a lot of soul and emotion in them) 🌌 💜 🎨

Aaaah! I’m so happy, thank you so much for the cheers! I really need them 💛 💦

🎉 Thank you so much dears! 🎉

Wonderfully done and such a great post. I love how thoughtful your art is. The world is an interesting place and you know how to capture that.

Hi Melinda! Thank you so much for your comment, I feel really motivated and happy reading you, and yes, the world is vast and huge, I would like to learn more and get so much better at many skills in order to express this in a better manner 🎨 💕 ✨

🌷 Tons of Hugs to you! 🌷

I am sorry to hear about your argument with your mom. And I am sorry this have discouraged you from drawing daily. I think artists are beautiful and very interesting people. Some people might be afraid of different things and this is the reason why they react the way they do. Please, just don't feel hurt.

I love your drawing. It is stunning!

Thank you for sharing!

Hello Delishtreats!, thank you so much for your sympathy with my situation and myself, when I remember this, I frankly feel very sad because, if I think about it, in the case I would have continued drawing, who knows where would I be, maybe working as a freelancer illustrator and this would have been a job that could fill me with happiness in so many senses...

You are right, many fears are simply based on situations where people doesn’t know how to get through, understand, accept and respect what is “different” óAó 💦

Thank you so much for your kindness and cheers, I’m trying to get better and get through the things that happened to me on the past, and live a lot more on the present 🌈 ✌ 🎐

💕 Tons of hugs to you! 💕

I always consider people who get to do what they love and what they are passionate about very lucky. It's a pity that often they don't realize how lucky they are and how many people would wish to do their dream job..

It's been my pleasure :)

Have a lovely day! PS: This is the cutest GIF that I've ever seen! :)
