SF Pride: Everything you need to know about San Francisco gay pride

Entering its 49th year, the San Francisco Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Pride Parade happens Sunday, June 30. And while the parade itself has turned into an optics opportunity for tech companies and politicians—Gavin Newsom will be the first California governor to march in the parade—it remains a time for queers from around the world to honor their past and themselves.

An estimated 100,000 revelers are expected to line Market Street for the parade, with an extra 50,000-plus marchers.

But Pride weekend is so much more than just the parade.

Smaller, locally-focused marches prefacing Sunday’s main march have turned into must-attend events, especially for locals who want to eschew the gawking, the fighting, and the alcohol-infused Bay to Breakers-like vibe found at Sunday’s impenetrable Civic Center party. The Dyke March and the Trans March—which happen the Saturday and Friday of Pride weekend, respectively—have, for many, turned into the real San Francisco Pride marches.

In addition to events and marches galore, there will also be many Muni disruptions, street closures, and more. The theme for 2019 is Generations of Resistance, a tip of the hat to the Stonewall riots, which turned 50 this year, and the 1966 Compton Cafeteria riots.

Here’s what you need to know about SF Pride weekend:

San Francisco LGBT Pride Parade

• When: Sunday, June 30, starting at 10:30 AM
• Where: Along Market Street, from Embarcadero to Civic Center

San Francisco LGBT Pride party

• When: Saturday, June 29, from noon to 6 p.m. and Sunday, June 30, from 11 a..m to 6 p.m.
• Where: Civic Center Plaza and surrounding area.

Dyke March

• When: Saturday, June 29—rally begins at 11 a.m. and march starts at 5 p.m. (get there early!)
• Where: Rally happens in Dolores Park. The march starts from Dolores Street along 18th Street to Valencia Street to 16th Street and up into the Castro to 18th and back to Dolores Park.

Trans March

• When: Rally starts at 3 p.m., march starts at 5 p.m.
• Where: Dolores Park. The march route will go up Dolores Street from the park, make a right on Market, left on Viki Mar Lane (also known as Taylor Street), and over to Eddy Street. The marchers will fill in Eddy Street to hear speakers and to party.

How to watch the parade live on TV or online

KPIX will broadcast and livestream the parade today from 10:30 a.m. until about 3:30 p.m. Sunday. The first hour of the coverage will be a Pride special.
